After removing the WSUS role on my SCCM 2012R2 server and reinstalling it, the “Launch Post Installation Task” step fails to complete with the following error in the log file.

After reading various posts with people saying it was an IIS issue, and the IIS people saying it was a WSUS issue I was still left like everyone else with no solution.

So, I did a little tinkering and found a solution that worked for me. What it turned out to be in my case was the WSUSPool Application Pool under IIS.

I tried to remove the WSUSPool under IIS and it wouldn’t let me as there were 8 applications using this pool. So my next step was to remove the WSUS site from my IIS website after which I was able to successfully remove the WSUSPool.

After removing the WSUSPool I launched the Post Installation Task step for WSUS again and this time it completed successfully.
